| The chapter studies the lexical borrowing pattern in Kali'na, a Cariban language of French Guiana. It presents its history and contact languages, giving insights into cultural and social history of the language. The study is based on lexical data containing a list of 1500 meanings. It provides informations about the source language, the number and kind, the semantic word class, the semantic field and the integration of the loanwords. It is a part of a project based on 41 languages from around the world. During the first phase of the project (2004-2009), it was known under the name Loanword Typology, and was coordinated by Martin Haspelmath and Uri Tadmor at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. This phase was completed with the publication of the online World Loanword Database (2009), as well as the book Loanwords in the World's Languages: A comparative Handbook (De Gruyter Mouton, 2009). |
