From a narrative of the self to the Grand Narrative: a collective Armenian autobiography in Ethiopia

Résumé
The narratives of Avédis Terzian, a descendant of Armenian immigrants in Ethiopia, raise the question of how historians and social scientists specialising on migration should approach biographical material and the conditions influencing its production. The narrator would have liked to have written the history of his community but never translated this desire into practice. His narratives constitute a collective autobiography by proxy which merges his life story with the history of his compatriots and strives towards underlining the exemplary nature of the Armenians’ roots in Ethiopia.
Les récits d’Avédis Terzian, un descendant d’immigrants arméniens en Éthiopie, posent la question du statut que l’historien des migrations ou le chercheur en sciences sociales doivent accorder au matériau biographique et aux conditions de sa mise au jour. Le narrateur aurait voulu écrire l’histoire de sa communauté mais il n’est jamais passé à l’acte. Ses récits forment une autobiographie collective, sorte d’écriture par procuration qui fait coïncider le récit de sa vie avec celui de l’histoire de ses compatriotes, et veut démontrer l’exemplarité de l’enracinement arménien en Éthiopie.
