Early contacts in Oceania, or history as anthropology

Abstract : This article comments the problems of analysis encountered by both anthropologists and historians to decipher situations of first encounters between Europeans and Oceanians, and the long-term historical processes they triggered. It stresses therefore the necessity, in Oceanian situations and probably elsewhere, to integrate anthropology and history, generally split up in traditional academia.
