Mouvements en mer des puffins fouquets reproducteurs de la colonie de Gouaro Deva (Nouvelle- Calédonie) : compte rendu de mission, 25 février – 14 mars 2014

Abstract : At-sea movements of reproducing wedge-tail shearwaters of Gouaro Deva (New Caledonia): mission report, 25 February – 14 March 2014. We aimed at determining the feeding areas of the colony of wedge-tailed shearwaters from Temrock, Gouaro Deva, between February 25 and March 14, 2014, in the midst of reproduction. Thirty eight active burrows were identified. Forty-three adults using these burrows were captured and fitted with a GPS. Thirty six GPS were recovered from the birds returning to the colony, between one day and 13 days spent outside their burrow. Most birds had moved into an area of the ocean forming a band parallel to the northwest coast of New Caledonia’s Grande Terre, about 100 km long and about 50 km seaward. The chicks were weighed at regular intervals throughout the experiment, to compare their growth with that of chicks from two other shearwater colonies in the Coral Sea. At the end of the experiment, 30 adults were fitted with light-sensitive loggers (GLS) in order to obtain information on bird movements outside the breeding season. These GLS will be recovered in late November 2014, when the birds will return to the colony.
