Parc naturel de la mer de Corail : des activités touristiques peu compatibles avec la préservation des espèces et des écosystèmes

Abstract : The government of New-Caledonia wishes to develop tourism in the Coral Sea Natural Park. The purpose of the present work is to present the activities envisaged by tourist operators in the Natural Park, based on the minutes of meetings of its management committee dedicated to tourism activities, on the transcription of a conference organized by a cruise operator, as well as documents produced by tour operators. According to the tour operators, mainly two types of activities would be sought by the clientele: (1) game fishing and (2) the visit of remote islets covered with seabirds, this in two types of sites of the Natural Park: the surroundings of quasi-pristine reefs in the Natural Park, and the Chesterfield Islands. It is here shown that the proposed tourism activities are not compatible with species and ecosystem conservation, which is the stated objective of the Natural Park. In addition, the few measures proposed by tourism operators to minimize their impact on species and ecosystems are not satisfactory.
