U. Mann-whitney and . Test, This finding suggested a different association with silica phases of the 18:0 compared to the 14:0 and 16:0. Possibly, 18:0 was associated with a more soluble silica phase, the dissolution of this phase being then necessary for 18:0 to be bioavailable. Unsaturated FA such as hexadecenoic acid 16:1 and oleic acid (18:1(n-9)) were still present in the frustule of T. weissflogii at the end of incubation. More generally, these results were in line with a protective effect of the frustule on its associated lipid fraction
