Abstract : Abstract - A new census of the birds of Matthew and Hunter Islands, south-east of the New Hebrides chain, was taken during a sovereignty mission of frigateship Vendémiaire of the French Navy, from 19 to 23 January 2009. The species that bred on Hunter were Black-winged Petrel (Pterodroma nigripennis), Brown Booby (S. leucogaster), Red-footed Booby (S. sula), Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) and White Tern (Gygis alba), but only a small part of the island was explored by us. The species that bred on Matthew were Black-winged Petrel, Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus pacificus), Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra), Brown Booby, Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus), Grey Noddy (Procelsterna albivitta) and Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata). A rat (Rattus sp.) was sighted on Hunter. No hen or cock (Gallus gallus), nor any rat were sighted or captured on Matthew. The seabirds seen at sea were the petrels Pseudobulweria rostrata, Pterodroma cervicalis, P. leucoptera and P. nigripennis, the shearwaters Puffinus pacificus and P. griseus, the tropicbirds Phaethon lepturus and P. rubricauda, and Sterninae. Wedge-tailed Shearwaters were very abundant in the vicinity of Grande Terre, especially on either side of Havannah Pass.
