Mise au point d’un indice pour l’analyse spatio‐temporelle de l’agrobiodiversité : cas de l’agriculture itinérante sur brûlis au Vanuatu.

Abstract : Shifting cultivation is the dominant land-use system of the inter-tropical zone. Rural people of developing countries use the high agrobiodiversity of this system for their subsistence. However, shifting cultivation remains largely unstudied in some geographical areas and particularly in Vanuatu, an archipelago located in the South-Pacific. This report examines shifting cultivation in Vanuatu in relation to agrobiodiversity. There were a total of 297 swidden parcels surveyed across six villages and six islands in Vanuatu. The results showed a high species and variety richness in both villages and swiddens. An inter-swidden diversity is highlighted and a typology of seven types of swiddens is proposed. Each type has specific structural and functional features that are the result of the farmer specialization. In two of the types of swidden farmers practiced cultural succession and there was found to be a decrease of agrobiodiversity during this cultural cycle, especially for taro and yam swiddens. Finally it was found that classical biodiversity indices are not adapted to swidden agrobiodiversity in Vanuatu and thus a new index of agrobiodiversity that is sensitive to varietal richness is proposed. This new index could be used as a tool for further studies of shifting cultivation in the inter-tropical zone.
