Mission MOMAlis aux îles Chesterfield, 23 mai - 08 juin 2012 : premiers résultats

Abstract : The presence of large colonies of seabirds breeding on the Chesterfield Islands suggests the occurrence of abundant resources at sea in the central Coral Sea. Being able to locate these resource hot spots in a perspective of management and conservation of marine ecosystems in the Coral Sea is a major challenge. The objective of the MOMALIS mission to the Chesterfield Islands was to determine the foraging strategies and feeding ecology of seabirds breeding on the Chesterfield Islands and to understand the oceanographic mechanisms that lead to the concentration of marine prey searched by seabirds. We fitted frigatebirds (2 Fregata ariel, 6 F. minor) with Argos transmitters and boobies (15 Sula leucogaster, 28 S. sula) with GPS to track their movements in the Coral Sea and adjacent regions. Our purpose was to relate the feeding zones of seabirds with the local oceanographic conditions. We also examined the prey caught at sea by birds returning on colonies from spontaneous regurgitation, and found that they preyed mainly on squid and surface pelagic fishes. Pelagic fishes from the reef and lagoon were caught exclusively by brown boobies. Maps of seabird feeding areas were superimposed on oceanographic structures modeled from satellite data (surface temperature , chlorophyll, sea level) in real time. We found that the feeding areas of seabirds often correspond with areas of divergence (upwelling) around ocean mesoscale eddy structures, but not with the micronecton densities calculated by the SEAPODYM model.
