Données complémentaires sur l'avifaune marine de l'atoll des Chesterfield (parc naturel de la mer de Corail) : diversité spécifique et taille de population

Abstract : Seabird abundance data acquired during five one-off ornithological expeditions between 2012 and 2019, all during the warm season from November to April, to the Chesterfield-Bampton and Bellona atolls, which had not been taken into account in a previous compilation, are presented. Fourteen species were recorded during these five expeditions, 12 of which breeding. A large co-lony of the sooty tern Onychoprion fuscatus was observed on Avon S islet for the first time (April 2017). The roseate tern Sterna dougallii was observed for the first time nesting on these atolls (Tortue Island, April 2017). Herald's petrel Pterodroma heraldica was contacted there for the first time since its discovery, in 1858-1859 (Anchorage islets, April 2017). The importance of the islets of the Chesterfield atoll for the conservation of seabirds in the tropical Western Pacific is here confirmed.
