« Monument des martyrs » dans la ville d'Abidjan : de la reconnaissance urbaine à la légitimation politique (2002 à 2010) « Monument of the martyrs » in the city of Abidjan: from urban recognition to political legitimation (2002 to 2010)

Abstract : This text deals with the fate of monuments built in memory of victims built as martyrs, in a context of crisis in Côte d'Ivoire. He is mainly interested in how the authorities legitimize them since their construction. As for the "monument of the martyrs", the results show a sort of legitimization of power in step with the mobilization of urban logics. What goes through the following practices: recognition and valorization of dead as martyrs, identification with the monument, resistance and domination of identity. The article highlights a variability of the fields of use of the monument as a social resource. The practices that are associated with its development, the way in which these practices maintained in the planning of the city are as much room for maneuver to strengthen the legitimacy of the power in place. In sum, the text shows that the legitimization of the monument in the processes of urban planning favors rationalities whose coherence consolidates public action in matters of governance.
